The Memorial to Former Overseas Combatants<\/strong> was inaugurated on June 10th 2010<\/strong>, Day of Portugal.<\/p>\n

The set is composed of two distinct elements. The central part consists of a column, “torn” at the top as a symbol of the separation between the past and the future, which includes a plaque with the names of the 42 combatants from Vila do Conde who lost their lives in the Portuguese Colonial War. This centerpiece has the statue of a young fighter who spent in Africa some of the best years of his life.<\/p>\n

On the other side, on the bench by the river, next to the dock, you can view the statue of a woman, symbolizing the melancholy of those families who have seen their loved ones leave, in double meaning.<\/p>\n

The work was done by Vila do Conde’s artists Manuel Sousa Pereira, Eduardo Bompastor and Jo\u00e3o Macedo.<\/p>\n
