Memory Obelisk

The Memory Obelisk is a monument alluding to the first landing attempt of D. Pedro’s liberal troops on July 8th 1832, at the mouth of the Ave river. This attempt was denied by the refusal of Brigadier Cardoso de Menezes, governor of the Fort of Saint John the Baptist, which prompted the about six dozen vessels to continue to travel south.
Eventually, after passing the pine forests located south of the Ave, they would finally land at Pampelido. These thousands of liberals took the nickname “The Braves of Mindelo“.
